The Rare Double Cancellation

Men’s Night was cancelled for the second week in a row this past Wednesday due to rain and saturated course conditions, following the previous week's cancellation for low turnout.

I don't recall back-to-back cancellations like this. It is an extraordinarily rare occurrence. Just how rare is it? I examined some completely made up facts and figures to help put it into perspective:

You are 4.2 times more likely to witness someone get a hole-in-one on the par 4 second hole using an 8 iron than have Men’s Night cancelled two weeks in a row. The odds of back-to-back cancellations are less likely than your hole group playing nine holes without anyone complaining about one of their shots. The average golfer has a better chance of putting a brand new ProV1 into play on hole 1 and still having it at the end of the round. You are more likely to order and receive a glass of wine from the beer cart than to have two weeks in a row with no Men's Night. The probability of this double cancellation is lower than everyone in your group hitting a par three. And finally, the chance of back-to-back cancellations is statistically lower than an entire foursome completing a full Men’s Night round without the use of either profanity or alcohol.

The greens were just aerated on Thursday and Friday, which involved punching holes and top-dressing them with sand. This is a critical process for maintaining healthy putting surfaces. Once the soil cores were extracted, sand was used fill the holes, improving drainage, smoothing the green, and helping to structuring the root zone.

We played our weekly couple's golf yesterday evening, and the greens were already in reasonable shape. By next Wednesday, they should be in fine for Men’s Night.

Speaking of next week, Wednesday is a statutory holiday. With the days noticeably shortening, we are moving our tee time up to 5:00 PM. Hopefully, this earlier start works well for everyone who does not have to work.
